For a long time, NZ favoured protectionism in agriculture. Production was subsidized, but rather than helping, NZ found itself on the brink of financial disaster in 1984. By eliminating subsidies and opening up to the world market, the NZ agriculture enjoyed a new start and finally experienced some prosperity.
